SAT Preparation: Complete Guide 2026

by Klaudio

The SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) is a standardised exam by the College Board, fully digital since 2024, used for university admissions in the USA and also accepted by Italian universities such as Bocconi, LUISS, Politecnico di Milano and Cattolica International. The Digital SAT lasts 2 hours and 14 minutes, has two sections (Reading & Writing and Math), a 400-1600 score range, no penalty for wrong answers and an adaptive format. In Italy it can be taken in Milan, Rome, Florence and other locations. 2026 dates: March, May, June, August, October, November, December. For Bocconi, a minimum of 1040 (520 per section) is required; for competitive American universities, 1350+.

What is the SAT and why it matters in Italy

The SAT is a College Board standardised test accepted by over 4,000 American universities and top Italian institutions including Bocconi, LUISS, Politecnico di Milano and Cattolica. In Italy, it serves three purposes: admission to US universities, access to selective Italian programmes as an alternative to proprietary tests, and applications to European universities like IE Madrid or ESADE.

For a student in Italy, the SAT serves in three main scenarios:

Admission to American universities. For those aiming at US colleges — from the Ivy League to liberal arts — the SAT is fundamental. Even at "test-optional" universities, a good score significantly strengthens the application.

Admission to selective Italian universities. Bocconi accepts the SAT as an alternative to its internal entrance exam — find the details in our guide SAT for Bocconi: required score and how to prepare. LUISS offers direct admission with the SAT. Politecnico di Milano accepts it as an alternative to the TOLC-I from 2025/2026. Cattolica International requires it for English-language programmes.

Admission to European universities. IE (Madrid), ESADE (Barcelona), and numerous universities in the UK, the Netherlands and Scandinavia accept or require the SAT.

The advantage of the SAT over Italian entrance exams: it can be retaken multiple times per year (7-8 dates), it is standardised globally (your score is comparable with millions of candidates), there is no penalty for wrong answers, and once you achieve a good result it is valid for years.

Digital SAT 2026 Structure

Since March 2024, the SAT is fully digital and lasts 2 hours and 14 minutes (compared to 3 hours for the paper version). It is taken on devices provided by the test centre or personal devices, through Bluebook, the College Board's official app for the Digital SAT. The format, described on the official Digital SAT structure page, is stable for 2025 and 2026.

The two sections

Reading & Writing — 64 minutes, 54 questions

Two modules of 32 minutes each, 27 questions per module. Unlike the old SAT with its long passages, the Digital SAT presents short passages (25-150 words) followed by a single multiple-choice question with 4 options.

The questions cover four areas:

  • Craft and Structure: vocabulary in context, text purpose, textual structure
  • Information and Ideas: reading comprehension, inferences, data analysis
  • Standard English Conventions: grammar, punctuation, sentence structure
  • Expression of Ideas: text revision, rhetorical effectiveness, transitions

For an Italian student, this section is the main challenge — it requires mastery of written English at an academic level. Our English tutoring specifically prepares for the academic register required by the SAT.

Math — 70 minutes, 44 questions

Two modules of 35 minutes each, 22 questions per module. Questions come in two types: 33 multiple choice (4 options) and 11 open response (Student-Produced Response, where you write the numerical result).

Areas covered:

  • Algebra: linear equations, systems, inequalities, linear functions
  • Advanced Math: quadratic equations, polynomials, exponential and radical functions
  • Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: ratios, percentages, probability, descriptive statistics, graph analysis
  • Geometry and Trigonometry: plane geometry, Pythagorean theorem, circles, basic trigonometry

For an Italian student with a good scientific high school background, the Math section is often the strongest. The content corresponds to the Italian math programme through the third/fourth year of high school. The difficulty lies in the format — questions in English with specific mathematical terminology — not in the math itself. Our SAT preparation pathway works on both content and format familiarity.

Calculator: for the entire Math section, a Desmos graphing calculator is integrated into the Bluebook app. You can also use your own approved calculator.

Break: 10 minutes between Reading & Writing and Math.

Scoring and adaptivity

The SAT scores range from 400 to 1600, combining Reading & Writing (200-800) and Math (200-800). There is no penalty for wrong answers. The format is adaptive: performance in Module 1 of each section determines Module 2 difficulty, affecting the maximum achievable score. The global average is approximately 1090; Bocconi requires at least 1040, competitive US universities 1350+.

How scoring works

  • Reading & Writing: 200-800 points
  • Math: 200-800 points
  • Total: 400-1600 points (scores are valid for 5 years)
  • No penalty for wrong answers — always answer everything

The score is not simply the number of correct answers. The Digital SAT uses a conversion system (raw score to scaled score) that accounts for the difficulty of the second module received.

The adaptive format

The Digital SAT uses an adaptive testing format: each section is divided into 2 modules, and the difficulty of the second module adapts based on performance in the first. The first module contains a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. Based on your performance, the system assigns you a harder or easier second module.

If you do well in Module 1, you receive a harder Module 2 — but this gives you access to higher scores. If you do poorly in Module 1, you receive an easier Module 2 — but your maximum achievable score is limited.

Strategic implication: Module 1 is crucial. A strong performance in the first module "unlocks" the potential for high scores. It is better to invest a few extra seconds for accuracy in Module 1 than to rush to finish quickly.

For section-by-section preparation: SAT Math and Reading & Writing: Strategies to Maximise Your Score

How to prepare: a strategic approach

SAT preparation requires 4-12 weeks depending on starting level. For Italian students, Math is typically the strongest section — content corresponds to the high school programme through third/fourth year. The main challenge is Reading & Writing, which requires mastery of academic English. The optimal path: initial diagnostic, targeted study on weak areas (60-70% on R&W for most students), and timed simulations in the final weeks.

The advantage of Italian students

Italian students with a good scientific high school background have a structural advantage in the Math section. The topics covered by SAT Math correspond to the Italian programme through the third/fourth year of high school — many Italian students find SAT math simpler than what they face in school. The challenge is the English terminology and question format.

The Reading & Writing section is generally the most demanding for non-native speakers. It requires deep understanding of written academic English — vocabulary, nuances, complex grammatical structures. Knowing English is not enough — you need specific mastery of the academic register.

The three phases of preparation

Phase 1: Diagnostic (1 week). Take a complete official practice test (available in the College Board's free Bluebook app). Analyse the result: where do you lose points? Math or Reading & Writing? In which subcategories?

Phase 2: Targeted study (4-8 weeks). Work on weak areas. For most Italian students, this means focusing on Reading & Writing (academic vocabulary, advanced English grammar, text analysis) dedicating 60-70% of the time to it, and on the Math section only to familiarise yourself with the format and terminology (30-40% of the time).

Phase 3: Simulations and refinement (2-3 weeks). Full timed practice tests. Error analysis. Refining time management strategy. At least 3-4 full simulations in the last two weeks.

For students at international schools (IB, A-Levels, AP): often 4-6 weeks are sufficient for the Reading & Writing section, with an almost exclusive focus on question format rather than content. For information on our pathways and packages, check our pricing page.

FAQ

How many times can I take the SAT? There is no limit. You can take it at every available date (7-8 times per year). Universities only receive the scores you choose to send — you can choose which result to share. Bocconi considers the best overall score from a single date (no superscore).

Does the SAT penalize wrong answers? No. There is no penalty. Always answer every question, even if you are unsure. A random answer has a 25% chance of being correct — it costs nothing to try.

Can I use the SAT to get into Bocconi? Yes. Bocconi accepts the SAT as an alternative to the Bocconi test for all undergraduate and Law programmes. Minimum threshold: 1040 total, with at least 520 in each section. For the BAMAI (AI) programme: minimum 600 in Math.

Where can I take the SAT in Milan? Milan has College Board authorized test centres, generally at international schools. Find the nearest location on satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/test-centre-search. Spots are limited — register early.

How much does the SAT cost? For international students: approximately $101.50. Score delivery to up to 4 universities is included. Additional deliveries and date changes have extra costs.

Is the Digital SAT easier than the old paper SAT? The difficulty is comparable — scores are directly comparable. The digital format is shorter (2h14min vs 3h), questions are on shorter passages, and the calculator is available for the entire Math section. Many students find it less stressful.

How does test adaptivity work? Each section has two modules. Your performance in Module 1 determines the difficulty of Module 2. A harder Module 2 gives access to higher scores. This is why Module 1 is strategically the most important — aim for accuracy.

Does Politecnico di Milano accept the SAT? Yes, from 2025/2026 Politecnico di Milano accepts the SAT as an alternative to TOL/TOLC-I for Engineering programmes. Check specific score requirements on the Politecnico website.
