The SAT is accepted by Bocconi as an alternative to the proprietary test for admission to all programmes except Law (which requires LSAT). A competitive SAT score for Bocconi is 1400+, with 1500+ considered very strong. From 2026, you can submit both results — the Bocconi test and the SAT — and the university automatically considers the best one.

Why consider the SAT for Bocconi
The SAT is a valid alternative to the Bocconi test for all programmes except Law (which requires LSAT). It makes sense in three cases: if you are already preparing for US universities, if you prefer a test with abundant material and predictable structure, or if you want to leverage the 2026 dual score by submitting both SAT and Bocconi test — the university automatically considers the best.
Full requirements are described on the official Bocconi admission page.
There are three situations where the SAT becomes particularly interesting:
You are already preparing the SAT for other universities. If you are applying to American universities or international programmes that require the SAT, using the same score for Bocconi is efficient — one preparation, multiple options.
You prefer a widely documented test. The SAT has decades of preparation material, thousands of official questions and a predictable structure. The Bocconi test, being proprietary, has less material available.
You want to maximise options with the dual score. The 2026 update allows you to submit both the SAT and Bocconi test. The university takes the best. This dual coverage reduces risk.
For those who have no other reason to take the SAT, the Bocconi test remains the most direct choice: it is shorter (75 vs ~130 minutes with breaks), costs less (EUR 60 vs ~$60 + score delivery) and the material is calibrated exactly to Bocconi selection. Required SAT score for Bocconi
Bocconi does not publish official minimum scores but uses percentile-based conversion tables. Data indicates that below 1200 is not competitive, 1300-1400 is in the average range of admitted students, 1400-1500 is competitive for most programmes, and 1500+ is very strong. Bocconi does not accept the superscore — only the best overall score from a single attempt counts.
Detailed ranges:
| SAT Range | Competitiveness for Bocconi |
|---|---|
| < 1200 | Not competitive |
| 1200-1300 | Possible with excellent academic record |
| 1300-1400 | In the average range of admitted candidates |
| 1400-1500 | Competitive for most programmes |
| 1500+ | Very strong, competitive for all programmes |
The Digital SAT lasts 2 hours and 14 minutes and consists of two sections — Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (200-800) and Math (200-800) — for a total of 400-1600. The Digital SAT structure on College Board describes the format in detail. Bocconi considers both sections.
For more quantitative programmes (Economics, Finance, MACSAI), a strong Math section score is particularly relevant — our math tutoring prepares specifically for the SAT format. For English-language programmes, a good Reading and Writing score demonstrates language competence.
In summary, the minimum competitive SAT score for Bocconi sits in the 1300-1350+ range, while those targeting the most selective programmes should aim for 1400+.
Important note: Bocconi does not accept the superscore (combination of best section scores from different attempts). It only considers the highest overall score from a single attempt.

Choose the SAT if:
- You are already applying to universities that require it
- You have very strong English and prefer the SAT format
- You want abundant, structured preparation material
- You are aiming for the dual-score strategy (SAT + Bocconi test)
Choose the Bocconi Test if:
- Bocconi is your priority and you don't need other international tests
- You prefer a shorter, more focused test
- Your English is not at the level needed for SAT Reading/Writing
- You want to take the test from home without going to an authorized centre
Choose both if:
- You want to maximise your chances — from 2026 Bocconi automatically considers the best score between SAT and Bocconi test, making the dual score a legitimate and risk-free strategy
- You have time and resources to prepare for both (skills partially overlap)
2026 Update: the dual score
From 2026, Bocconi allows you to submit both the SAT and the Bocconi test with your application. The university uses percentile-based conversion tables to make scores comparable and automatically considers the best result.
This changes the strategy:
Before 2026: you had to choose one test and put everything on it. If the result wasn't satisfactory, you could retry the same test or switch to the other, but each attempt was a risk.
From 2026: you can build a safety net. Take the Bocconi test (cost: EUR 60, from home, 75 min). If the score is already strong, you're done. If you want to try to do better, take the SAT too. Submit both and Bocconi uses the best.
The Bocconi test and the SAT assess overlapping but not identical skills. Mathematics is the broadest common ground. Reading comprehension has different approaches in the two tests. The Bocconi test's critical thinking component is specific and must be prepared separately. For detailed strategies on each SAT section, see our guide on SAT Math and Reading & Writing strategies.

Book nowHow to send your SAT score to Bocconi
Sending your SAT score to Bocconi requires a specific procedure through the College Board (institutional code: 7206). The score cannot be uploaded manually — it must be sent officially. Processing takes 1-2 weeks, so for the Spring Session (deadline April 13) the last useful SAT is mid-to-late March. Delivery cost: ~$14 additional. Bocconi only accepts scores from 2021 onward.
Steps:
- During or after the SAT, indicate Bocconi as a score recipient. Bocconi's institutional code for the SAT is 7206.
- In the Bocconi application (Apply2B portal), enter the email associated with your College Board account in the designated field.
- Upload the delivery confirmation in the "Confirmation of SAT/ACT score delivery" section — the PDF of the delivery request or the communication from the College Board.
- Wait for verification — Bocconi checks the authenticity of all score reports. Irregularities = exclusion from selection for the entire academic year.
Critical timelines: score delivery via College Board can take 1-2 weeks. Don't leave everything to the last day. If the Spring Session deadline is April 13, your SAT must have been taken with sufficient lead time to have the score and organise delivery.
Costs: the SAT costs approximately 14 additional (or is included if indicated as a recipient at the time of test registration).
Validity: Bocconi only accepts SAT scores from 2021 onward. Earlier scores are not considered.
How to prepare for the SAT for Bocconi
SAT preparation for Bocconi focuses on two sections: Math (44 questions, content comparable to the Bocconi test with more trigonometry) and Reading & Writing (54 questions entirely in English, the real challenge for Italian students). If you are preparing for both tests, math is largely shareable; add 4-5 specific weeks for R&W if the SAT is in your plan. The adaptive format requires strategic attention to Module 1.
Math section (44 questions, ~70 minutes)
Covers algebra, problem solving, data analysis and trigonometry/advanced geometry. The level is comparable to Bocconi test math, with some differences: the SAT includes more trigonometry and less probability. The calculator is integrated into the digital platform (Desmos calculator).
If you are also preparing for the Bocconi test, the math preparation is largely shareable according to our study method. Add trigonometry and coordinate geometry if you haven't covered them.
Reading and Writing section (54 questions, ~64 minutes)
Entirely in English. Includes reading comprehension, grammar, rhetoric and editing. For an Italian student, this is the section that requires the most specific preparation — not for grammar itself, but for the reading speed and comprehension of academic texts in English. An English tutoring path focused on the academic SAT register can make the difference.
Recommended material: Khan Academy offers free, personalised SAT preparation. The College Board publishes complete official tests. For the Reading section, daily practice with English texts (academic articles, quality editorials) is essential.
Adaptive format
The digital SAT is adaptive by module: performance in the first module of a section determines the difficulty of the second module. A strong first module leads to a harder second module — but with higher potential scores. This means the first questions of each section have greater strategic impact.

Book nowIntegrated preparation plan (SAT + Bocconi Test)
If you decide to do both, organise preparation like this:
Weeks 1-3: Focus on mathematics (common to both). Cover all Bocconi test topics + add trigonometry for the SAT.
Weeks 4-5: Specific preparation for whichever test section you take first. If starting with the Bocconi test: critical thinking and reading comprehension in Italian. If starting with the SAT: Reading/Writing in English.
Week 6+: Full simulations for the upcoming test. After the first test, shift to specific preparation for the second.
Our simulation platform supports both Bocconi-style and SAT simulations, allowing you to track progress on both pathways with a single tutor coordinating the preparation.
FAQ
Is the SAT easier or harder than the Bocconi test?
They are different tests, not directly comparable in difficulty. The SAT is longer (2h+ vs 75 min) and requires fluent English. The Bocconi test is more concentrated and includes specific critical thinking. For an Italian student with good English, the SAT has the advantage of abundant preparation material — our complete SAT preparation guide covers structure and study plan in depth. For those with average English, the Bocconi test in Italian is more accessible.
Does Bocconi prefer the SAT or its own test?
No, both tests are treated as equivalent. Bocconi uses percentile-based conversion tables to make scores comparable. There is no declared preference for one over the other.
Can I submit my SAT superscore?
No. Bocconi does not accept the superscore. It only considers the highest total score from a single attempt. If you have taken the SAT three times with scores of 1320, 1380, 1350, Bocconi will consider 1380.
Is the ACT another alternative?
Yes. Bocconi also accepts the ACT with institutional code 5356. ACT scores from 2021 onward are valid. For Law/Global Law, the international alternative is the LSAT.
How much does it cost to take both the SAT and the Bocconi test?
SAT: ~14 for score delivery = ~$78 (~EUR 72). Bocconi test: EUR 60 per attempt. If you take one SAT + one Bocconi test: approximately EUR 130 total. If you take one SAT + four Bocconi tests: approximately EUR 310. Plus the EUR 100 for the application.
When do I need to take the SAT for the Spring Session?
The Spring Session closes April 13, 2026. The SAT score must be available and delivery organised before that date. Considering College Board processing times (1-2 weeks), the last useful SAT is the mid-to-late March one. Check available SAT dates in Italy on the College Board website.
Does it make sense to take the SAT if my English is not strong?
Probably not. The SAT Reading and Writing section requires rapid comprehension of academic texts in English — this is not a level reached in a few weeks. If your English is B1-B2, the Bocconi test in Italian is the more rational choice. If you are C1+, the SAT becomes a valid option. In either case, our SAT preparation pathway is personalised to your starting level.
