Politecnico di Milano accepts the SAT as an alternative to the TOL only for Engineering programmes (Engineering in Italian and Civil Engineering in English) — not for Architecture and not for Design. The official thresholds are ≥620 points per section (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math) for the early phase, or a converted score ≥30/100 for the standard phases of the 2026-27 cycle; for the 2027-28 early phase the bar rises to a converted score ≥75/100. Politecnico's College Board code is 7364. For Architecture the required test is the ARCHED; Design has its own admission process.

The rule in one line, and who it actually applies to
Politecnico di Milano accepts the SAT as an alternative to the TOL for admission to Engineering programmes: the Italian-taught Engineering programmes and the English-taught Civil Engineering bachelor. The source is the official Polimi page on SAT as an alternative test.
What the rule does not mean: that the SAT is a "universal key" to Polimi. For Architecture, Polimi uses the ARCHED, a dedicated test separate from the TOL. For Design, the Scuola del Design runs its own selection process (TOL-D). On both, the official SAT page does not list the SAT as a substitute, and prospective students should be clear about this before planning their prep — our complete SAT preparation guide flags it among the first things to clarify.
In summary:
- Engineering at Polimi (Italian) + Civil Engineering (English) → the SAT is an officially accepted alternative to the TOL
- Architecture at Polimi → you need the ARCHED, not the SAT
- Design at Polimi → dedicated admission process, not the SAT
For the full picture of the TOL and for choosing between the TOL and other tests, this guide pairs with TOL Preparation: Complete Guide and with the general SAT overview in SAT Preparation: Complete Guide.
Score thresholds: 620 per section or 30/100 converted
The official thresholds, read directly from Polimi's page, vary by phase and by cycle. For Engineering, the numbers are:
| Cycle / Phase | Required threshold |
|---|---|
| 2026-27, early phase | ≥620 points in each of the two SAT sections (EBRW and Math) |
| 2026-27, standard phases | Converted score (Polimi 0-100 scale) ≥30/100 |
| 2027-28, early phase | Converted score ≥75/100 |
Polimi's exact wording: "You can use the SAT test (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math sections, with at least *620 points in each)" for the 2026-27 early phase; "the converted and rounded score is greater than or equal to 30/100" for the 2026-27 standard phases; "if your converted and rounded score is greater than or equal to 75/100**"* for the 2027-28 early phase.
Three operational notes:
Per-section scores matter, not the "1600" total. For the 2026-27 early phase you need at least 620 in Math and at least 620 in EBRW: a total of 1,280 made of 700 in one section and 580 in the other does not meet the rule. Aim for balanced scores across the two sections — our guide on SAT Math and Reading & Writing: Strategies and Score covers this balance in depth.
Polimi uses an internal conversion for the standard phases. The SAT score on the 400-1600 scale is converted onto a 0-100 scale to compare it with TOL scores. The exact conversion table is not published, but the minimum threshold ≥30/100 (standard) or ≥75/100 (2027-28 early) is the official reference.
The 2027-28 early phase has a markedly higher bar. ≥75/100 converted is a demanding requirement: it means aiming for a clearly strong SAT, not a score barely above the floor. Students planning to use the SAT for the 2027-28 early phase need a margin, not a break-even.

Book nowWhere the SAT does NOT replace Polimi's admission tests
This is the most important point to clarify, to avoid wasted time or applications. At Polimi the SAT replaces the TOL only for the specified Engineering programmes. For other Polimi programmes it is not listed as an alternative test:
Architecture. Admission runs through the ARCHED, a test specific to the Architecture area, available in Italian or English. The SAT is not a valid alternative. Polimi's official page on Architecture admission describes the test in detail.
Design. The Scuola del Design has a dedicated admission procedure (TOL-D test and specific process). Polimi's SAT page does not list the SAT as a substitute for Design. Students aiming at a Design programme should check the procedure on the Scuola del Design site.
Other bachelor programmes outside Engineering, Architecture and Design. Polimi has few other bachelor programmes beyond these three macro-areas; each has its own admission rules to verify case by case, and the SAT is not a standard reference.
For Engineering, the other official alternatives to the TOL, alongside the SAT, are the TOLC-I (managed by CISIA, widely used across Italian universities), the CEnT-S and the ACT. Each has its own threshold and validity rules. The overall picture of the TOL and its relationship with these tests is in TOL Preparation: Complete Guide.
College Board code 7364: how to send the score
The SAT score is not uploaded manually to the Polimi portal: it must be sent directly by College Board to the receiving university. Politecnico di Milano's College Board institutional code is 7364.
The practical steps:
- SAT registration. When registering (or later from your College Board account) include code 7364 among the score report recipients. This can be done for free within a few days of the test date; further sends afterwards are paid.
- Score report transmission. College Board sends the official score to Polimi. The transmission takes time: plan everything with comfortable margin against Polimi deadlines.
- Registration in the Polimi portal. Verify in Polimi's Online Services that the score has been registered by the deadline for the cycle you are applying to.
Full procedural detail, including exact registration deadlines, is on the official Polimi SAT page.
Test validity and deadlines: 2026-27 and 2027-28
Validity windows for the test and for score registration change across cycles. The official dates for the two relevant cycles:
2026-27 cycle
- SAT taken between 1 January 2025 and 4 May 2026
- Score registered in Polimi Online Services by 11:59 (CEST) on 4 June 2026
- Early phase enrolment: from 4 May to 11 June 2026
2027-28 cycle
- SAT taken between 1 September 2025 and 31 August 2026
- Score registered by 11:59 (CEST) on 31 August 2026
Two things to keep in mind:
Taking the test in time isn't enough — the score must be registered by the deadline. Between the test date, the score report being received and the portal registration, weeks can pass. Plan at least 4-6 weeks of buffer, especially if this is your first College Board send to code 7364.
For 2027-28 the SAT validity window begins on September 2025: students planning ahead can therefore use a score obtained as early as late 2025, provided it is then registered by the 31 August 2026 deadline.
For students weighing the 2027-28 early phase (converted threshold ≥75/100) against the standard phases (≥30/100), the gap in required performance is very significant: the early phase rewards candidates already able to bring a strong SAT; the standard phases are accessible with much wider margins.

Book nowWhen the SAT is a rational choice (and when it isn't)
The SAT as an alternative to the TOL makes sense in specific cases, and in others it is simply additional work that doesn't justify itself.
When it makes sense to go with the SAT:
- You're already preparing the SAT for other universities (Bocconi, US universities, European institutions that accept it): one score covers multiple applications, and Polimi can be one of them with precise thresholds. The general SAT prep approach is described in SAT Preparation: Complete Guide.
- You have strong English (C1+) and are applying to Civil Engineering in English: the SAT measures skills consistent with an English-taught programme and lets you work with extensively documented material.
- You have access to good SAT prep material (Khan Academy, College Board books, targeted pathways like our SAT-focused math tutoring).
When it doesn't make sense:
- Your target is only Polimi in Italian and you have no other SAT-based applications. In that case the TOL is the natural test, in Italian, free for the standard attempt (apart from CISIA fees where applicable), with free official material.
- Your English is B1-B2. The SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section requires rapid comprehension of academic texts in English. Without solid English, this is the section where you risk falling short of ≥620 even with strong math.
- You're aiming at Architecture or Design. As noted, the SAT does not replace the ARCHED or the Scuola del Design's test: preparing it doesn't help for those programmes.
In every other case, the SAT as a route into Polimi for Engineering is a legitimate option, but it should be integrated into an overall strategy — not chosen in isolation.
SAT vs TOL: what changes in practice
The two tests are structurally different, even if both lead to the same outcome (admission to Engineering at Polimi). A concise comparison:
| SAT | Polimi TOL | |
|---|---|---|
| Language | English | Italian |
| Duration | ~2h 14min | ~100 min (variable) |
| Format | Digital, adaptive by module | Computer-based, non-adaptive |
| Sections | Reading & Writing + Math | Logic, Reading, Math, Physics (Polimi) |
| Score | 400-1600 | 100-point scale |
| Cost | ~15 score send | TOL Polimi registration fee |
| Prep material | Vast (Khan Academy, College Board) | Official Polimi and CISIA materials |
| Reusable | Yes, in many universities | No, valid for Polimi |
| Validity at Polimi | Engineering (IT) + Civil Eng (EN) only | All Engineering programmes |
The TOL is Polimi's "primary" test: it covers the full Engineering portfolio, is in Italian and is designed on the Italian high-school curriculum. The SAT is an alternative that makes sense when it is already part of your plan for other reasons — not as a "shortcut" around the TOL.

Book nowFAQ
Is the SAT accepted for every Polimi programme?
No. The SAT is accepted as an alternative to the TOL only for Engineering: Engineering programmes in Italian and Civil Engineering in English. For Architecture, Polimi uses the ARCHED; for Design, the Scuola del Design has its own procedure. The SAT is not listed as a substitute for Architecture or Design.
What's the minimum SAT score for Engineering at Polimi?
It depends on the cycle and phase. For the 2026-27 cycle, early phase: ≥620 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and ≥620 in Math. Standard phases 2026-27: converted score ≥30/100. Early phase 2027-28: converted score ≥75/100. The source is the official Polimi page on the SAT.
What is the College Board code for Politecnico di Milano?
7364. List it as a score report recipient when registering for the SAT or, later, from your College Board account.
When do I need to take the SAT for the 2027-28 cycle?
For the 2027-28 cycle, the SAT is valid if taken between 1 September 2025 and 31 August 2026, with the score registered in Polimi's Online Services by 11:59 (CEST) on 31 August 2026. Plan to take the test weeks ahead of the deadline to absorb College Board's processing time.
Can I use the SAT instead of the test for Architecture?
No. For Architecture, Polimi uses the ARCHED, a dedicated test available in Italian or English. The SAT is not listed as an alternative for Architecture.
What other TOL alternatives does Polimi accept for Engineering?
Beyond the SAT, Polimi lists the TOLC-I (managed by CISIA), the CEnT-S and the ACT as TOL alternatives for Engineering. Each has its own threshold and validity rules. The overall picture of the TOL and how these tests relate to it is in TOL Preparation: Complete Guide.
Does it make sense to take both the TOL and the SAT?
For Polimi, usually no: one valid test is enough for Engineering admission, and doubling the preparation takes significant time. Take the SAT if it's already part of your plan for other universities (Bocconi, US, Europe). For students starting from scratch on the SAT, the reference is SAT Preparation: Complete Guide.
How long does it take to prepare for the SAT for Polimi?
To reach ≥620 per section (2026-27 early phase) or ≥30/100 converted (standard phases) typically takes 6-10 weeks of targeted preparation, with a plan balancing Math and Reading & Writing. To aim for ≥75/100 converted (2027-28 early phase) the required margin is larger and the plan should start earlier. The prep detail is in SAT Preparation: Complete Guide.
