Why choose Up to Ten for the CAT4
No memorised answers
Schools use the CAT4 to understand how your child learns: a score inflated by memorising answers would do them no favours. That is why we don’t use test questions and we don’t promise scores.
The format shouldn’t catch them out
Number series, figure matrices, analogies, all timed, in English and on a computer: for a child who has never seen them, that is a lot. GL itself wants students to be familiar with the format before they start, which is why every test opens with examples. We do this calmly, ahead of test day.
Skills, not tricks
English vocabulary and comprehension, reasoning with numbers, close observation of shapes: we work on what the test measures, which also matters in class. Studies show that guided work with a teacher counts for far more than doing practice tests alone.
The whole admissions process, and beyond
The CAT4 is one part of the process: depending on the school, school reports, English and maths tests and an interview also count. And after the test, we go through the report with you and build the tutoring around what it shows.

How to read CAT4 scores
The CAT4 compares your child with children of the same age. The Standard Age Score (SAS) has a mean of 100, and anything from 89 to 111 falls in the average band. Alongside it, the report gives the national percentile rank and the stanine, a scale from 1 to 9.

The International School of Milan and ICS do not publish a minimum score: the CAT4 is read alongside the rest of the application. And what matters is the profile across the four areas, not just the average.

FAQ about CAT4
It is the Cognitive Abilities Test, fourth edition, from GL Assessment. It measures how a child or teenager reasons with words, numbers, shapes and space. It isn’t tied to the school curriculum: it doesn’t check what they have studied, but how they reason.
From Level A upwards there are eight short tests, two per area, in three parts: 8 to 10 minutes per test, 72 minutes in total, plus instructions and examples. Students choose the answer from five options, usually on a computer. The levels for the youngest children, X and Pre-A, have different, shorter tests.
It depends on age, and the school decides. The levels run from Level X (ages 6–7) to Level G (from age 14 and a half): for example, Level D covers ages 10–12, Year 7 in the English system, and Level E ages 11–13, Year 8.
GL Assessment advises against practising on test questions, because the results need to tell the school how your child really reasons. At the same time, GL wants students to be familiar with the format before they start, which is why every test opens with examples. That is where we work: question types, timing, the computer and, above all, the underlying skills. Studies of reasoning tests show that doing practice tests alone does little, while guided work with a teacher changes the results.
It depends on the school. In Milan, the International School of Milan asks for it from students entering secondary school, and ICS from Year 5; it is usually read alongside school reports, English or maths tests and an interview. Some schools, such as St George’s in Rome, state that the CAT4 alone does not decide admission.

Three of the four areas don’t require English, as GL itself says. The verbal part does: GL considers it less suitable for students who have been learning English for two years or less, and the school can take this into account. Working on English vocabulary helps both in the test and in class.
The report gives a Standard Age Score (SAS) for each area and an overall mean: 100 is the average for their age, and 89 to 111 is the average band. Alongside it are the national percentile rank, meaning how many peers out of 100 scored lower, and the stanine, from 1 to 9.
The report compares the verbal part with the spatial part. If one is noticeably higher than the other, the profile shows a verbal or spatial bias, which can be mild, moderate or extreme; if they are similar, there is no bias. Teachers use it to understand how your child learns best.
Yes: the score counts correct answers, and GL itself tells students to try to answer every question.
That is up to the school. GL advises waiting at least six months before retaking it, for example when a result does not seem reliable.
The school: it buys the test and runs it, and families do not register on their own. Some schools also let students take it at home, on a computer with headphones.
