How Much Does Tutoring Cost in Milan in 2026? A Guide to Real Prices

A one-to-one tutoring lesson with Up to Ten in Milan costs between €36 and €65 an hour: €36 up to the final year of high school, €45 at international schools, €50 at university, €55 for Italian entrance test preparation, €60 for the SAT and €65 for the GMAT and GRE. Those are the rates with the 12-hour package — but you can start with a single lesson, no package and no commitment.

I'm Filippo, co-founder of Up to Ten. We wrote this price list ourselves and we have no reason to hide it: here it is in full, with what it includes and a few honest criteria for comparing us with the rest of the Milan market.

How much does an hour of tutoring cost in Milan?

In Milan an hour of private tutoring costs between €15 and €50, depending on who is sitting across from you: at the bottom of the range, university students on their first job; at the top, experienced teachers and established centres. Preparation for international tests such as the SAT, GMAT and GRE is a market of its own and sits above that range. Up to Ten's one-to-one rates run from €36 to €65 an hour and depend on the level, not the subject.

These are the hourly rates with the 12-hour package, identical on-site and online. A single lesson costs a few euros more — €42 instead of €36, for example, up to the final year of high school. The full, up-to-date price list, 5- and 12-hour packages included, is on the pricing page.

One clarification we're often asked for: the same rate covers maths, physics, chemistry, Latin or any other subject. You pay for the student's level, not the subject.

Why do prices vary?

Three factors move the price: the student's level, the type of learning path and the lesson format. A university exam like Analisi 1 (first-year calculus) needs a more specialised tutor than a second-year high school syllabus, and a path towards an entrance test has a fixed deadline that changes the way you work.

The level. The higher you go, the more specialisation weighs. At high school a good STEM tutor covers maths and physics together; at university you need someone who knows the specific exam, often even the way that particular lecturer builds their written papers. That is why the university hour costs €50 and the high school one €36.

The type of path. Entrance test preparation costs more than school tutoring because the work is different: the tutor doesn't just explain the subject, they build strategies around the format of the paper, mark timed mock tests and manage a calendar that ends on a fixed date. You don't improvise against a deadline.

The format. On-site or online, the rate doesn't change. Home tutoring is slightly higher — it covers the tutor's journey to your house — and we quote it on request.

That leaves the bottom of the market: the €15-20 an hour you find by word of mouth. Usually a willing university student who explains the textbook again. For getting through an oral test it can be enough; for pulling up an average or closing gaps built over two years, almost never. And in that case the hours multiply: the "cheap" path often ends up costing more.

What is included in the price?

Every rate includes four things: a dedicated tutor chosen from our team of 35+ tutors, a personalised study plan, access to the Up to Connect platform and the teaching materials. There are no registration fees and no activation costs: you pay for the lesson hours, the rest is included.

The platform deserves an extra line, because it is the most concrete difference from a private tutor. After every lesson the tutor logs the topics covered, the homework set and how the student is doing on Up to Connect: parents see all of it from the parent dashboard, without having to cross-examine anyone over dinner. Over a path of 30 or 40 hours, that record is worth almost as much as the lessons themselves.

The honest comparison with a freelance, then, isn't rate against rate. An experienced private tutor in Milan charges €35-40 an hour, and we sit inside that range: €36 up to the final year of high school. What our price also carries is everything that usually goes missing around the single hour: a written plan, a record you can consult, a team behind the tutor — if the tutor isn't the right fit, you change without starting from scratch, because the plan and the record stay.

Since 2021 we have delivered more than 35,000 hours of lessons to over 630 students: this price list is the result of five years of adjustments, not a number put there to look competitive.

Is the 12-hour package better value than single lessons?

It depends where you are in the path. If you don't know us yet, start with one lesson: you buy it as a single lesson — €42 up to the final year of high school — and it commits you to nothing. Once the path is under way, the 12-hour package is almost always better value: for high school it costs €432 in total, against the €504 of the same twelve hours paid one at a time.

The saving — €72 at high school level — isn't the only reason. Two details families often discover only afterwards: package hours can be used on any subject at the same level, maths today and physics next week, and they can be shared between brothers and sisters. One package, two children, no complications.

And how many hours are really needed? From our experience: targeted revision before a class test fits into 3-4 hours; genuine catching up — a failed subject, an average to pull up, missing foundations — rarely takes less than 10-12. That is why we recommend the 12-hour package so often: not to sell you more, but because it is the shortest span over which results actually show.

Is the first lesson free?

No: the first lesson is paid, as a single lesson — €42 up to the final year of high school — and without having to buy a package first. It is a deliberate choice: with us the first lesson is a real lesson, in which you work on the subject straight away, not a presentation of our services.

While the student works, the tutor observes: the real level, the mistakes that repeat, which foundations hold and which don't. Out of that comes a study plan with goals and timings, and the family knows where it is heading and at what cost. An hour given away rarely produces any of this: whoever offers it has to recover the cost, and generally does so by using that hour to sell, not to teach.

And if after the first lesson you decide not to continue? You pay for that hour and we say goodbye: no contract, no fees, no persistent phone calls.

Does online tutoring cost less?

No: an online lesson costs the same as one on-site, because it is the same lesson — the same tutor from the team, the same study plan, the same platform for homework and tracking. The channel changes, the content doesn't. Charging less for online would only make sense if we put less into it.

Anyone who prefers to be in the room will find us at via Giuseppe Frua 21/6, in the De Angeli area: for many students, leaving the house and sitting down at a table with no distractions is already half the work. Home tutoring, as mentioned, carries a supplement quoted on request. And for anyone who alternates — on-site on Saturday, online on Wednesday — the rate stays the same.
