Why prepare with Up to Ten for the entrance test
The school report is already written
In Milan rankings the school report that counts is the one from the second year of middle school, already written. The December test is the only item still open, and in one liceo it is worth 67 points out of 93: almost three quarters of the total.
“Optional” does not mean “irrelevant”
State schools call it an orientation test (prova orientativa) and do not make it compulsory. But anyone who skips it enters the ranking without its points: with more applications than places, that is the difference between your first choice and your second.
A format never seen in middle school
Five-option logic questions, a cloze with twelve words to choose from twenty, the clock running and, in one test, a computer: these are not class tests. A student who knows the format spends the 70 minutes answering, not working out the instructions.
Three areas, not just one
Reading comprehension is worth as much as logic and maths, and one test includes English too. That is why the path is not STEM only: we work on maths and logic, on reading and vocabulary and, where needed, on English, with the same tutor following your child throughout.

Our approach
How we prepare your child for the test
A short path, from October to December: we start from how your child reasons today and arrive at the test knowing what to expect, area by area.

The starting point
In the first lesson the tutor has your child sit a test in the real format, taken from those the schools publish, and goes through it with them: that shows which areas to work on and how many hours are really needed.

Logic and maths
Deductive logic, geometry, combinatorics, sequences, last digits of powers: questions that are not on the middle school syllabus, but your child learns to recognise them. No calculator, and the shortest route to each one.

Reading, vocabulary and English
The cloze is won by reading the whole passage before choosing the words; the questions on the text ask students to separate what is written from what they think. We train fast, accurate reading, vocabulary, grammar and, for the tests that include it, English.

Timed practice tests
In the final weeks your child sits the full test against the clock, in the format of their chosen school: two 70-minute blocks on paper or 90 minutes on a computer. Every practice test is reviewed with the tutor, and parents can follow progress on Up to Connect.

Not the September test
Two tests with the same name, two different things
Search for “liceo entrance test” and you almost always find the test schools give in September, after enrolment, to get to know their new first-year classes. The test this page is about is a different one: it is taken in December of the third year of middle school, before enrolment, and it decides the order of the ranking.
December entrance test

Why the difference matters: the materials you find online by searching “liceo entrance test” are almost all September tests, with questions on the middle school syllabus. The December test asks for something else: logic, fast reading, time. Preparing on the wrong material gives a false sense of security.

FAQ about Test d'ingresso liceo
It is the written test that some Milan licei use to rank applications when they receive more than they have places. In state licei it is called an orientation test (prova orientativa), it is optional and its score is added to the second-year middle school report; in some private schools it is a true admission test with a pass mark. It takes place in December of the third year of middle school, before the January enrolment window.
In Milan, for the 2026/27 cycle, it was used by two state scientific licei, the municipal language liceo and a few private schools. Most Milan licei, including some of the most sought-after, hold no test at all and, when oversubscribed, rank applications by siblings, the middle school’s guidance recommendation, home address or school report. Names and sources are in the note at the bottom of the page: always check the school’s website, because the criteria change every year.
Three areas. Logic and maths: multiple-choice questions (for example 20 with five options), no calculator. Reading comprehension and Italian: a passage with a cloze, meaning words to put back into the text chosen from a list, and questions on the passage; or INVALSI-style vocabulary, grammar and syntax. English, only in some tests. One test also includes a questionnaire on motivation and interests.
It depends on the school. In December 2025 one liceo ran two 70-minute blocks on paper, in person on its own premises; another 90 minutes on a computer, at an external test centre; the municipal liceo two hours on site. In every case a single date, in the afternoon, and no option to take it online from home.
The 2025 Milan tests fell on 9, 10 and 11 December, on different days: those who wanted to sat more than one. You register on the school’s website between late November and early December, usually attaching the second-year middle school report. The 2026 dates have not been published yet: historically they come out in November, and the test falls in the second week of December.

More than the school report. In one state scientific liceo the ranking is out of 93 points: 20 from the second-year middle school report, up to 5 for home address, 1 for siblings and 67 from the test (26 logic and maths, 26 reading comprehension, 15 questionnaire). In another, the test score, converted to a mark out of 35, is added to the overall average and the grades in Italian, English, maths and science.
In state licei, no, it is not compulsory: you enrol through the Ministry’s portal in January either way. But anyone who skips it enters the ranking without its points, and when applications exceed places it is precisely the test that makes the difference. In private schools with an admission test, on the other hand, the test is a required step.
Those from the second year of middle school, already closed in June: the average across all subjects and, with extra weight, Italian, maths, history and science, or Italian, English, maths and science, depending on the school. The third year does not come into it: by the time the test is taken, the school report that counts is already written. That is why the test is the only lever left.
The application passes automatically to the second school listed at enrolment, and then to the third. That is why it pays to choose the other two options carefully too, and to know which licei use the test and which do not: for the second choice, the test taken in December no longer counts.
The September test is taken in the first year of high school, after enrolment, and helps teachers get to know the class: it does not count towards grades and decides nothing. Almost all the material you find online by searching “liceo entrance test” is about the September test.
You can, and the schools themselves publish past papers “to give an idea of the structure and the type of questions”. Logic is trained by recognising problem types; reading comprehension improves with a reading method; time can only be managed once you have tried it. What cannot be prepared is the questionnaire on motivation and interests: there, your child simply answers honestly.
It depends on the test, and it is one of the first things the tutor checks in the chosen school’s rules. In one Milan test blank answers count as wrong, so it always pays to answer; in another there is no penalty for mistakes. In the timed practice tests your child applies the right rule until it becomes automatic.
Yes, if they fall on different days: in 2025 the three Milan tests were on 9, 10 and 11 December. It only makes sense if those schools really are among your three choices, because the test counts only for the school listed as first choice.
