GMAT Scores for Top Business Schools

by Klaudio

The GMAT score you need depends on the business school: SDA Bocconi averages around 665 on the current format (equivalent to ~700 on the old scale), INSEAD and LBS target 680-710, top American MBAs 700+. But the GMAT is one component of the application, not the only one. A strong profile can compensate for 20-30 points below the average; a weak profile won't be saved by a 750.

The current GMAT scale: finding your bearings

The GMAT uses a 205-805 scale, not directly comparable to the old 200-800. A 645 on the current format equals approximately 700 on the old scale; a 665 equals approximately 720. Sections (Quant, Verbal, Data Insights) range from 60 to 90 and carry equal weight. When a school reports "average GMAT 710," it may refer to the old scale.

Here is the approximate conversion for the most commonly searched scores:

Current format (205-805)Old GMAT (200-800)Percentile (approx.)
555~62060th
595~66075th
615~68082nd
645~70088th
665~72092nd
695~74097th
715~76099th

The table is not an official GMAC conversion — it is an estimate based on published percentiles. For reference, a score of 700 on the old scale corresponds to the 87th percentile (top 13% of candidates), while a 750 reaches the 98th percentile (top 2%). You can verify the methodology in detail on how GMAT scoring works on mba.com. These estimates are sufficient to understand where you stand when comparing your score to schools' historical data.

Target scores for major European business schools

European business schools require GMAT scores between 615 and 680 on the current format: SDA Bocconi averages 660-665 (competitive range 635-700), INSEAD and LBS target 665-680, HEC Paris 645-665, while IE and ESADE are more accessible at 615-640. For those living in Italy, these are the most natural target schools.

SchoolAvg GMAT (current format)Competitive range
SDA Bocconi660–665635–700
INSEAD665–680680–710
LBS665–680650–710
HEC Paris645–665630–690
IE615–635
ESADE~620–640

SDA Bocconi (Milan)

The SDA Bocconi MBA programme has an average GMAT of around 660-665 on the current format. SDA Bocconi itself indicates that full tuition waivers require a minimum of 645 (equivalent to 700 on the old scale). The competitive range is 635-700.

Bocconi is a school that looks at the complete profile — work experience (average 5.5 years for the entering class), essays, references, interview. A 615 with an exceptional professional profile can get in. A 700 with generic essays and 2 years of experience probably won't.

For those targeting Bocconi from Italy, the GMAT is often the most controllable differentiator. All else being equal in the professional profile, 30 extra points can make the difference between admission and the waitlist. INSEAD (Fontainebleau / Singapore)

INSEAD recommends aiming for the 70th-75th percentile in each section. In practice, the target is 680-710 on the current format. The average score of the entering class is around 709 on the old scale (approximately 665-680 in the current format). INSEAD is particularly selective: admission rate around 15%.

INSEAD highly values international diversity and requires competence in at least two languages. An Italian candidate with fluent English and a third language has a structural advantage.

London Business School (London)

LBS has an average GMAT similar to INSEAD: approximately 710 on the old scale, which corresponds to ~665-680 on the current format. The competitive range is 650-710. LBS is known for valuing experience in the financial sector — if you come from investment banking or consulting in Milan, the profile aligns well.

HEC Paris

Average GMAT around 700 on the old scale (~645-665 on the current format). HEC has a 16-month MBA programme with a strong focus on entrepreneurship and leadership. The competitive range is 630-690.

IE Business School (Madrid)

IE is often more accessible in GMAT terms: average around 660 on the old scale (~615-635 on the current format). But the programme is highly selective on other fronts — entrepreneurship, leadership, international profile.

ESADE (Barcelona)

Similar to IE: average GMAT 660-680 on the old scale. ESADE has a programme with a strong design thinking and social innovation component.

Target scores for American business schools

American business schools require higher GMAT scores: Harvard and Stanford average around 730-738 on the old scale (approximately 693-695 on the current format), while Wharton, Columbia, Kellogg, MIT Sloan and Booth range from 727-730 (approximately 683-688). International candidates should aim 20-30 points above the average to compensate for the competitive pool.

SchoolAverage GMAT (old scale)Current format estimateCurrent competitive range
Harvard Business School730 (range 690-760)~695675-730
Stanford GSB738 (range 700-770)~693670-730
Wharton728~688665-720
Columbia729~685660-715
Kellogg727~683655-710
MIT Sloan730~685660-715
Booth (Chicago)730~685660-715

Note: average data refer to recent classes and in some cases are on the old scale. Conversions are estimates. American business schools are still updating their reported averages to the new format.

An international candidate (non-American) applying to an American MBA generally needs a GMAT slightly above the school's average to compensate for the more competitive international applicant pool. Careful timing is essential: the article on when to take the GMAT explains how to synchronize preparation with admission rounds.

Beyond the number: what really matters

The GMAT is important, but it is not everything. Business schools use a holistic admissions process where the test is one component. Here is what weighs alongside the score.

Work experience — quality, career progression and impact matter more than duration. 4 years with rapid growth and increasing responsibility are worth more than 8 years in the same position.

Essays — the questions change every year, but the principle is constant: the school wants to understand why an MBA, why this school, and what you will bring to the class. Generic essays ("I want a career in management") don't work. Specific essays with concrete goals do.

International profile — for European schools in particular, diversity is a value. Languages spoken, international experiences, ability to work in multicultural contexts.

References — two professional letters confirming the qualities claimed in the essays. The best come from direct managers who can speak to your concrete impact.

Interview — many European schools (Bocconi included) invite only pre-selected candidates for an interview. The interview is conversational but evaluates leadership, motivation and fit with the programme.

When the score compensates (and when it doesn't)

A high GMAT compensates for a less conventional professional profile, a low undergraduate GPA, or an academic background unrelated to business. If you come from a humanities degree and want to enter Bocconi, a 680+ demonstrates that you have the necessary quantitative skills.

A high GMAT does not compensate for insufficient work experience (under 3 years for most programmes), generic or poorly written essays, or a profile without growth. A 750 won't save an application that lacks substance.

A below-average GMAT is acceptable if you have an exceptional professional profile (you work at Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, or have founded a company), a strong academic background (honours degree from a recognised university), or a demographic profile that the school is seeking (gender diversity, nationality, sector).

The practical rule: if your GMAT is in the upper half of the school's range, the test won't be an issue. If it is in the lower half, everything else must be stronger than average.

Section scores matter

Business schools don't just look at the total — they also look at individual section scores. A 665 total with 82 in Quant, 75 in Verbal and 72 in DI tells a different story from a 665 with 70 in Quant, 80 in Verbal and 78 in DI.

For schools with a strong finance orientation (LBS, Bocconi), a high Quant score is particularly valued. For schools focused on leadership and communication, Verbal carries more weight.

Data Insights is the newest section and schools are still calibrating how to evaluate it. But since it tests data literacy — the most in-demand competency in current MBA programmes — a high DI score is a positive signal that few schools ignore.

Scholarships and GMAT

For many business schools, the GMAT is an explicit criterion for scholarships. SDA Bocconi, for example, requires a minimum of 645 (current format) for full tuition waivers on the MBA programme — the complete scholarship for a programme that costs EUR 82,000. Other schools use similar thresholds.

The logic: a high GMAT score signals analytical ability, discipline in preparation and serious motivation. For merit-based scholarships, it is often the most objective and comparable criterion.

If the cost of the MBA is a factor (and for most candidates it is), investing in GMAT preparation has a direct ROI: the 30 points separating a 615 from a 645 can be worth tens of thousands of euros in scholarships. For tutor preparation costs, visit our pricing page.

The strategy for Italian candidates

Italian candidates should consider three scenarios: for SDA Bocconi you need at least 665 and must differentiate within the Italian pool with strong essays; for non-Italian European schools (INSEAD, LBS, HEC) being Italian is a diversity advantage; for American schools you should aim 20-30 points above the average with longer, more structured preparation.

For SDA Bocconi: the pool of Italian candidates is large. For those also considering the undergraduate path, the SAT is a valid option for entering Bocconi. For the MBA, the GMAT must be at least at the class average (665). Work experience in consulting, finance or tech in Milan is the most common profile — to differentiate yourself you need strong essays and a score that leaves no doubt.

For non-Italian European schools (INSEAD, LBS, HEC): being Italian is an advantage in terms of diversity. The GMAT can be slightly below average if the rest of the profile is strong. The most underestimated barrier is English: the GMAT Verbal is effectively the test of your reading speed in academic English.

For American schools: the international pool is highly competitive. Aim for 20-30 points above the school's average. Preparation must be longer and more structured — top American schools have higher scoring standards.

A tutor who knows both the GMAT and the business school landscape helps you calibrate the target score to the specific programme you are considering. Simulations on the Up to Ten adaptive platform show exactly where to gain the missing points — so the work is targeted, not generic. There is no point in spending 3 extra months going from 665 to 695 if your target school averages 645. That time is better invested in essays.

FAQ

Does SDA Bocconi accept the GRE instead of the GMAT? Yes, both the GMAT and GRE are accepted. SDA Bocconi also offers an alternative "SDA Test" for EUR 100, but the GMAT remains the preferred test for admissions due to comparability. If you are only targeting Bocconi and your profile is strong, the SDA Test is an option — but it limits the ability to use the same score for other schools.

Can I get into INSEAD with a GMAT below 650? Theoretically yes — INSEAD has no declared minimum. In practice, with a 620-640 you need an extraordinary profile: experience at McKinsey, BCG or similar, strong international background, third language. For most candidates, below 650 the odds drop significantly.

Does the GMAT matter more than university GPA? It depends on the school. For American programmes, GPA is very important. For European schools, the GMAT tends to carry more weight because university grading systems are not easily comparable across countries. An Italian 28/30 is not immediately interpretable for a French school — a GMAT 665 is.

If I have a 615, is it worth retaking to aim for 645+? Almost always yes. 30 points are realistically achievable with 4-6 weeks of targeted work on weak areas — especially if the first attempt was made without specific preparation on exam strategy. Our GMAT preparation pathway is built precisely for this type of targeted improvement. That 30-point jump can mean access to scholarships that repay the preparation investment many times over.
